Originating from a beautiful State and being cherished all around- Patiala Salwar Kameez is an outfit which will stay in fashion for years to come. The stylish yet traditional look of this garment is what makes it remain in demand. By adorning the Patiala Salwar with beautiful shirt or kameez, the Patiala Salwar Kameez becomes a perfect garment that can be worn on special occasions. The designer salwar kameez are the ones that completely fulfill the purpose and any woman looks outstanding. There are also unstitched salwar suits and the designer suits for women are the first choice of women all around.

There are many women who would want to get the Patiala Salwar Kameez stitched at home. There may be many reasons for this, namely, there are people who want to learn stitching Patiala Salwar Kameez or many other reasons. To stitch a Patiala Salwar, you need to cut the material in the following four segments.

Ø 2 Kali Pieces (one for each leg)

Ø 1 waist band

Ø 4 triangle shaped pieces (two for each leg)

Ø Stings and the ankle bands are also needed

These are the four cut pieces that you would require for stitching a Patiala Salwar. Here is a simple step by step guide through which you can learn stitching Patiala Salwar Kameez. Scroll down to till the end and follow the process.

1. The Measurements: The measurements are the first step in the process. You should get the measurement of the Patiala Salwar as-

Ø Length- 41” inches

Ø Hip- 35” inches

Ø Hip to Waist- 8” inches

Ø Ankle- 11” + 1” inch for the stitching allowance

Note- All the measurements are just for reference, one should take their own measurements before stitching the salwar.

2. Material Suggestion: The suggested materials are cotton and crape. Stitch your Patiala salwar with these materials as these materials will add flare to your Patiala Salwar.

3. Requirement of Material: Take 3.5 meters of material so that a beautiful Patiala Salwar can come out.

4. The Construction:

Construction of Waist Band

Cut a single piece of cloth for waist band in the following reference measurement.

Ø 0 to 1 = waist band width (i.e. 8”) +2”= 10”

Ø The 2” extra is taken to make the opening for inserting the draw string.

Ø 0 to 2 = full hip +6” (e.g. 46”)

Ø 1 to 3 = full hip +6”

Construction of Kali Piece

Cut two pieces from the material that you have, use the reference measurement for the same.

Ø 0 to 1 = salwar length – waist band width + 1”

Ø 0 to 2 = approximately 13” (including stitching allowance. The maximum that we can take is 16”)

Ø 1 to 3 = approximately 13”

Construction of Legs

Ø 0 to 1 = salwar length – waist band width (i.e. 8”) + 1” (e.g. 41”-8”+1” = 34”)

Ø 0 to 2 = Full cloth width

Ø 1 to 3 = Full cloth width

Ø 1 to 4 = 3”

Ø 2 to 5 = 3”

Ø 6 to 7 = (1/3 hip) + 1 ½” – waist band width

Ø 8 to 7 = (1/3 hip) + 1 ½” – waist band width

Ø Join 5 to 4

The Method of Cutting the Cloth

First is explained the stitching of legs. Follow the number in the explanation as it has been mentioned above.

1. First of all take the entire cloth and place it neatly on a table. Now fold it diagonally from the reverse side and name the corners as 1 & 3 and 0 & 2.

From either of the edges, leave a .5” inches, cloth, as the allowance and mark 0 to 1 measurements and similarly mark 2. Now draw a straight line joining 0 and 2.

Then from 1 and 2, measure 3” inches respectively to get 4 and 5. Join 4 and 5.

Now take 7 from both the 6 and 8. To take 7, you will have to place the 6 on 5 and 8 on 4, thereby you will get both the 7. Now draw a line on the 4 and 5 and cut the fabric through this. By cutting this you will get 4 pieces of cloth.

Now put all the 4 layers of cloth on top of each other and leave 1/2” inches from the diagonal top. Leave 1/2” allowance at the 6 to 7 line as well and cut the cloth. Both the Patiala legs are stitched together at this line. Now use the remaining cloth cut the kali pieces, waist band and the ankle bands.

2. Cut the remaining segments from this cloth using the above mentioned measurements

Method of Stitching

1. Now you have 4 triangular, 2 kali and 1 waist band. Put 2 triangular and 1 kali piece together and the other set together. Both the sets will form one leg.

2. Now stitch the 3 pieces of both the legs neatly.

3. Now cut the ankle bands from the bottom of the stitched legs. In the diagram it is shown as a to b distance. Make sure that this piece of cloth is 5 inches in its breadth. Get buckram of the same length and 2” inches breadth. And now stitch the ankle bands with buckram piece and then to the legs of the salwar.

4. Now join the two ready legs at the 6 to 7 line. Take the waist band and join it to the two ends from the reverse, leaving an allowance of 1” inch from the edge and 1.5” inches from the top. Fold the excess cloth from the bottom and the top and stitch it inwards.

5. Now when your waist band is ready, stitch the legs to the waist band taking .5” pleats throughout the circumference of the waist band. Make sure that this stitching is done neatly. Insert the string on the top of the salwar and give the finishing touch by cutting the extra thread that is coming out. And your Patiala Salwar is ready.
